Cook Folly

Cook Folly, in a nutshell, will function as a restaurant. As a work of art, however, it is expected to become a bottom-up model for urban regeneration in a run-down part of the city in desperate need of revitalization. With young food-related entrepreneurs as partners, the project will also promote social events. The architectural planner will be Chef and entrepreneur Jang, Jinwoo who has become one of the most-talked about and celebrated names among young people for creating dynamic culinary and cultural experiences including Spindle Market, a food-court-like restaurant in Itaewon, and the Jang, Jinwoo Street in the nearby up-and-coming Gyeongnidan-gil area of Seoul.

Located at the alley of Hwanggeum-dong in Gwangju, Chungmijang became a local specialty after the Korean War with its table set menus that combine dining and drinking. As Chungmijang gained fame, Korean restaurants opened one after another which gave Gwangju the title of the home of cuisine. Chungmijang renovated an old traditional house built in 1970 and is run by Gwangju Youth Union.

Towards social issues such as revitalizing the old downtown, youth unemployment, balanced regional growth, establishing tourism infrastructure and city-branding, Cook Folly adopts a somewhat light, fun and tasteful approach. Taking the format of a ‘select-dining’ place, the platform gathers Gwangju and Jeollanamdo’s representative ingredients and food together with young locals. Through this, it proposes a small but strong model of a virtuous cycle. Cook Folly consists of a greenhouse café & bar Congzib and Chungmijang which is a hanok offering Korean Food, both named after the oldest and most popular café and restaurant in the history of Gwangju.
